Career in brief
John has experience as an independent HR consultant and previously was a senior HR manger with a number of the UK’s largest private electricity companies. He jumped off the corporate career ladder so that he could spend less time in the car and focus on the work that increasingly fascinated him during his career, namely having a critical consultative input. He has a strongly collaborative approach and a track record of working at Board level to develop and drive through radical changes designed to transform culture and performance. With over 20 years of generalist experience in industry he has a track record of leading negotiations with national trade union officers. During that time he has lead teams of senior managers during periods of significant change by managing teams across the UK and working specifically in North America and the Czech Republic. In addition he has experience of being a non-exec director with a highly successful Telecomm consultancy.

Some recent assignments:
  • Developed an IR strategy that enabled a national carrier to achieve an overhead reduction of £4 million per anum, rationalise 4 Company Agreements into 2 streamlined Agreements and negotiate a 2 year business performance related pay deal.
  • Through an iterative process facilitated the development of company values for an international luxury goods Company and embedded these values into all HR processes. Developed and delivered a ‘Shadow of the Leader’ development experience that translated the values into appropriate leadership behaviours.
  • Led the HR element of a company-wide performance improvement exercise designed to introduce transformational performance improvement. Recruitment, in 8 months, of 250 new staff across the UK, the reorganization of all management teams and the development of assessment and development centres.
  • Worked over a 10-month period on a $1.4 billion deal to successfully acquire two 1000MW nuclear power stations in Ontario. Leading an HR team on acquisition work that included direct negotiation with Directors of the Canadian utility, gathering data, analysing risk and accounting for non-funded liabilities.
  • Developing a post acquisition HR strategy for 4750 staff. This strategy included the method for culture change, developing a new organizational structure, terms and conditions. Negotiating Heads of Agreement with Canadian national trade unions and the development of an equity stake approach to secure cooperation.
  • Developed and implemented a strategy to bring together senior teams and achieve cost saving synergies between previously competing organizations; subsequently being recognized as the most cost effective of all the UK electricity generators.
  • Designed HR strategies for an electricity trading business and delivered an increase in the trading function by 50%, recruiting specialized traders and account managers. Led the development of a new performance related pay scheme for Trading Staff and new terms and conditions for staff at a conventional power station, securing both with 2 year performance linked pay deals.
Previous Career Experience:
  • British Energy – HR Business Partner Nov 2000 – March 2005 As a member of the Generation Board lead a team of nine HR managers’ responsible for the HR service to eight nuclear power stations and central nuclear operations.
  • British Energy – Senior Vice President of HR – North America Jan 2000 – Nov 2000 Living in Toronto worked with British Energy’s CEO over a 10 month period on a $1.4 billion deal to successfully acquire two 1000MW nuclear power stations in Ontario.
  • TXU Europe – Vice President of Generation HR Oct 1996 – Jan 2000 Appointed to the Generation Board to lead a team of 7 HR managers’ responsible for the HR service to 8 conventional power stations and central support operations.
  • National Power – HR Manager March 1990 – Oct 1996 Worked initially in the Employee Relations department during the critical post privatization period and then latterly as HR manager at Ironbridge Power Station.
